“Effective discipline means that we’re not only stopping a bad behaviour or promoting a good one, but also teaching skills and nurturing the connections in our children’s brains that will help them make better decisions and handle themselves well in the future.”
 ― Daniel J. Siegel

As an Occupational Therapist (OT), my career has focused on helping children to build the solid foundations they need to reach their potential. By understanding these solid foundational skills such as sensory processing, motor skills and self-regulation, you will be able to support the children you work with to develop their learning in the school environment.

As Educators and SNA's, you spend large amounts of time every day with these children where everyday opportunities can be used to build positive learning experiences.

This course will help you understand the 'Why' behind a child's behaviour, the 'What' causes these difficulties and the 'How' you can help develop these skills in school.

After completing this course, you will feel more confident in understanding the underlying skills necessary for school-based tasks such as handwriting, organising belongings and paying attention. With this understanding, comes an increased ability to identify possible difficulties and put strategies in place immediately that can help support a child's participation and learning in the classroom.

The best intervention is done through everyday opportunities as they arise in a child's natural environment. By using this time to help build solid foundational skills, it will benefit a child not only now but when they are a teenager and adult.

Lots of the practical strategies discussed are suitable for the school and home environment. Therefore this course is also suitable for parents or other professionals who work with children.
